Postgraduate Qualification Studies

Education and Rehabilitation of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

GOAL OF THE STUDIES

The aim of the studies is to equip the student with knowledge about the basics of education and rehabilitation of people with intellectual disabilities, and with the skills to carry out tasks in the field of education and upbringing of people with intellectual disabilities of a varying degree. The participants of the studies will obtain qualifications to conduct classes in special, inclusive and generally accessible institutions with children and youth with mild, moderate, severe and profound intellectual disabilities. Obtained qualifications and the curriculum meet the requirements set out in the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 25th July, 2019 on the standard of education preparing for the teaching profession.

DESCRIPTION

In recent years, due to the rising popularity of inclusive education, the demand for teachers who have the appropriate qualifications to conduct classes in the field of special education has increased. Meeting this demand, the University of Silesia gives university graduates with pedagogical preparation an opportunity to gain qualifications in this field. The curriculum includes lectures, practicals, field classes (internship with tutoring and holiday internship) allowing students to learn the legal, theoretical and methodological foundations of planning, conducting and evaluating classes with students with intellectual disabilities.

GRADUATE PROFILE

After graduation, the graduate has knowledge about the basics of education and rehabilitation of people with intellectual disabilities and the skills necessary to carry out tasks in the field of education and upbringing of people with intellectual disabilities of a varying degree. The participants of the studies will be qualified to work with a student with intellectual disability as part of their eligibility to teach the subject; to conduct classes in special, inclusive and generally accessible institutions with children and adolescents with mild, moderate, severe and profound intellectual disabilities.

CURRICULUM

During the studies, classes in the field of oligophrenopedagogy are conducted, including: the basics of typhlo-pedagogy, medical aspects of education and rehabilitation of people with intellectual disabilities with elements of therapeutic pedagogy, alternative and supporting communication, early support for child’s development and, methodology of education and training of students with intellectual disabilities with moderate and severe intellectual disability.

LECTURERS

Classes are conducted by a highly qualified staff of specialists, scientists and practitioners:

  • Sabina Pawlik, PhD – head of postgraduate studies, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Pedagogy, special education teacher in the field of education and rehabilitation of people with intellectual disabilities
  • Bogumiła Bobik, PhD – Assistant Professor at the Institute of Pedagogy, certified teacher, school pedagogue in a complex of special education schools
  • Prof. Anna Nowak – Professor at the Institute of Pedagogy, lawyer, specialist in the field of Polish legislation for people with disabilities
  • Krzysztof Kotrys, MD, PhD – psychiatrist, Deputy Spokesman for Professional Liability of the Silesian Medical Chamber in Katowice since 2004.

ORGANISATION

Duration:
Number of semesters: 3
Number of hours: 630 hours (including internship)

Organisation of classes:
Classes take place on Saturdays and Sundays – two sessions per month on the average.

Graduation criteria:
In order to complete postgraduate studies, a student must defend the diploma thesis.

Graduation document:
Postgraduate diploma issued by the University of Silesia in Katowice.

ADMISSION PROCESS

Candidates
The target group are teachers of the subject or early childhood education who want to obtain qualifications in special education to conduct classes with children and youth with intellectual disabilities.

Apply online
Electronic admission process in Online Application System (IRK) on the dates specified in Online Application System (IRK). Choose and proceed according to the instructions.

Admission criteria:
Candidates are admitted to studies according to the registration order and the result of the admission procedure (if it was conducted).

Planned date of beginning classes: October 2021

FEES

After being admitted to postgraduate studies, you may start your studies, subject to paying the fee for postgraduate studies. Payments should be made to the student’s individual account, within the deadlines specified in the agreement.
